About Leslie

Leslie Johnson (born January 12, 1975, in Fort Wayne, Indiana) is one of the most accomplished women's basketball players ever to come out of the state of Indiana — a state that takes its basketball as seriously as any in the nation. Standing 6'2" with the physicality of a classic power forward and the skill to dominate on every level, Johnson earned the affectionate nickname "Lady Barkley" for her ability to dominate the paint, haul in rebounds, and score from all over the floor.

At Fort Wayne Northrop High School, Johnson was a force of nature — averaging 28.4 points per game in her senior season as her team went 25-1. She graduated as the seventh all-time leading scorer in Indiana girls basketball history, a record made even more remarkable by the quality of players the state has produced.

At Purdue, she made an immediate national impact. As a freshman, she was named the Consensus NCAA National Freshman of the Year — the first freshman in Purdue history to earn First Team All-Big Ten honors — and helped guide the Boilermakers to the 1994 NCAA Final Four. After transferring to Western Kentucky, she continued to shatter records, becoming the first player in school history to surpass 1,000 points in two separate seasons.

Her professional career spanned six countries across three continents, and in 1998 she became the first Fort Wayne native to play in the WNBA, appearing for the Washington Mystics. In 2019, she was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility — the first Fort Wayne player ever to receive that honor.
